Security breaches and organization response strategy: Exploring consumers’ threat and coping appraisals

We address a long-standing lacuna in the Information Management literature on relationships among security breaches, organization response strategy as well consumers’ threat and coping appraisal. Security breaches can involve leak of sensitive data, potentially lead to negative consumer reactions. It is, thus, timely critical theorize empirically investigate ways which respond effectively how appraisals vary according different strategies. Our study addresses this by developing conceptual model i) breach, ii) strategies, iii) appraisal, grounded risk theory protection motivation theory. use principal agent perspectives portray breached providing strategy, consumers actors who evaluate strategy. incorporated vignette-based survey test with empirical data. identify that variations after breach significantly discuss implications our findings for practice delineate an agenda future research.
